Buenos Aires Tango Festival and Tango Dance World Championship 2008

The 10th Buenos Aires Tango Festival and the 6th Tango Dance World Championship took place in Buenos Aires during August. Both aimed to enrich a reality that is part of their vital core: tango represents a sort of synopsis of Buenos Aires for the rest of the world.

In Buenos Aires, the birthplace and cradle of tango, dancers from around the world converged to compete for the tango crown. Last Ausgust, the world's most sultry and smouldering practitioners of stylised eroticism, part dance and part theatrical performance that is tango, arrived in Argentina to meet with the Buenos Aires "milongueros", the local experts, to test their tango credentials on the dance floor.. There were two competition categories: Salon Tango and Stage Tango. The Salon Tango is the social dance as a popular practice originated in the Rio de La Plata, the Stage Tango aims to promote new values with choreographies that enrich the dance from a theatrical point of view. In both categories, competitors represented their city of origin or residence. The United States, Russia, Germany and were represented among other countries. The competition consisted of three stages: Qualifying Rounds, Semifinals and Finals. The Jury was appointed by the Championship management jointly with the AMBCTA (Association of Masters, Dancers and Choreographers of Argentine Tango).Competitions took place in various venues across the city. Free dance classes and concerts were also part of the festivities.
